HIDA Grand Limestone Cave

Hello! Machiyado-Ichiryu service staff Ando.

It’s already mid-September, but the hot weather still lingers.

This time, we’d like to introduce a cool and refreshing spot that will make you forget all about the heat!

Located about halfway between Hida-Takayama and the Okuhida Onsen area, this limestone cave stretches for approximately 800 meters and is considered one of Japan’s most scenic and extensive tourist caves.

At an altitude of about 900 meters, it holds the distinction of being Japan’s highest tourist-accessible limestone cave.

Inside, the temperature is a constant around 12°C (53.6°F)—so cool it might even feel a bit chilly!

The cave is divided into three sections.

From the Second Cave onward, the paths become steeper with more slopes and stairs.

For those who may have concerns about physical endurance or mobility, each section has an exit, so you can decide how far to go based on your own comfort and ability.

If you plan to visit, we highly recommend wearing warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes.

Discounted combo tickets are available at the Nohi Bus Center next to Takayama Station.

If you’re coming by car, we also offer discount vouchers at our lounge—feel free to stop by and make use of them.

Come escape the summer heat in Takayama and experience the natural coolness of the mountains!

We look forward to welcoming you.
