The Seasonal Beauty of Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Hello, this is Kyo from the service staff.

Today, I would like to introduce a recommended sightseeing destination around Takayama.

Takayama is located in a high-altitude area, so summers can be quite hot with strong sunlight, while winters are very cold with frequent snowfall.

This winter has not been extremely light in snow, but even when it does snow, it doesn’t accumulate much and tends to melt rather quickly. Guests who are expecting the classic “snow country” scenery may find it a little less impressive than usual.

That is why I would like to introduce Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is about a one-hour drive from Takayama City. Although the distance is not very far, the amount of snow there is said to be more than three times that of Takayama, offering a truly different, almost otherworldly winter landscape.

The Seasonal Beauty of Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go is beautiful throughout the year, and each season offers completely different scenery.

❄ Winter (Mid-December to Late February)

The most popular season is winter, when a magical snowy wonderland spreads across the village.

Snow piles up on the thatched roofs of the traditional gassho-zukuri houses, creating a scene that feels like stepping into a Japanese folk tale.

The light-up events held in January and February are especially breathtaking.

At night, the softly illuminated village against the snow creates a magical view beyond words.

This event is fully reservation-only, and tickets sell out very quickly every year.

I’ve always wanted to go, but unfortunately I still haven’t had the chance yet ( :_; )

It’s definitely on my bucket list.

🍁 Autumn (Mid-October to Early November)

During autumn, the mountains turn red and yellow, creating a beautiful contrast with the traditional houses.

It’s a very photogenic season, and on clear days the crisp air makes walking around especially pleasant.

🌸 Spring (Mid-April to Early May)

As the snow melts, cherry blossoms begin to bloom, bringing gentle spring colors to the rural landscape.

The combination of gassho houses and sakura is a quintessentially Japanese view.

🌿 Summer (June to August)

Surrounded by deep greenery, Shirakawa-go becomes fresh and vibrant.

Although it is famous for winter, summer is cool like a mountain retreat, perfect for relaxed strolling.

My Personal Visits

Last year, I visited Shirakawa-go twice — once in autumn and once in winter.

I was lucky to have clear weather both times, and the scenery was absolutely stunning.

Autumn was colorful and warm in feeling,

while winter was quiet and dreamlike.

I was amazed at how the same place could feel so different depending on the season.

During my winter visit, I even saw a white heron.

The white bird against the snowy landscape created such a picturesque scene that I couldn’t resist taking photos.

Access (Transportation)

There are several ways to get to Shirakawa-go:

              •            Private car

              •            Taxi

              •            Highway bus

I used the bus both times.

From Takayama, Nohi Bus operates services roughly once every hour, making it very convenient.

Travel time is about one hour.

Suggested Sightseeing Time

In my opinion, around 3 hours is enough to enjoy the main highlights.

Recommended itinerary:

              •            Gassho village walk: ~1 hour

              •            Observation deck: ~1 hour

              •            15 minutes uphill on foot (one way)

              •            Shuttle bus: ~5 minutes

              •            Considering waiting times, I personally recommend walking

              •            The walk itself is enjoyable with nice views

              •            Souvenir shopping: ~30 minutes

              •            Lunch: ~30 minutes

Of course, if you take photos or visit cafés, you could easily spend half a day.

Each season in Shirakawa-go has its own charm, but if you would like to see a true snowy landscape, winter is definitely the most recommended time.

Please experience this beautiful snow world, so different from Takayama.
